Tackling Stress In Schools

 A one-day programme for Headteachers, Senior Management and Governors

  • Provide a clear understanding of the legal requirements for managing stress in schools.
  • Define “stress” and the difference between pressure and stress.
  • Explain how the negative effects of stress can affect the performance of staff and pupils.
  • Provide an understanding of the causes of stress so that appropriate action can be considered to minimise or reduce the results.
  • Help managers understand their own behaviour and assess whether it could be a cause of stress for other people.
  • Enable managers to recognise the symptoms of stress in others so that early intervention can take place to prevent the build up of pressure resulting in stress.
  • Provide practical instruction in the risk management approach and the development of action plans in accordance with Health & Safety Executive guidelines.

Programme Objectives

The overall aim will be to provide teachers with the skills and knowledge to recognise the effects of stress in themselves and to have a wide variety of practical techniques that they can use to eliminate, reduce and cope with stress.

  • Provide a clear understanding of the meaning of stress and an awareness of the difference between pressure and stress.
  • Provide an understanding of the causes of stress so that individuals can assess the impact of stress on both themselves and their colleagues.
  • Enable individuals to recognise the signs and symptoms of stress in themselves and others.
  • Enable staff to break the vicious cycle of stressful thinking and to recognise the vital link between our beliefs, perceptions and experiences of stress.
  • Provide easy to use skills and techniques of mindfulness to create resilience.
  • Help individuals to adopt an attitude of personal responsibility for their own stress management and health and well-being.
  • Provide practical strategies to prevent and manage stress in both the short term and the long term; including ways to avoid stress, reframing situations, thinking positively, responding proactively, managing change, and learning how to relax and recharge, anywhere, any time.
